The Holy Spirit Enables us to Grow in God

By Apostle Ricardo ‘Reason’ Butler

“You crazy Galatians! Did someone put a hex on you? Have you taken leave of your senses? Something crazy has happened, for it’s obvious that you no longer have the crucified Jesus in clear focus in your lives. His sacrifice on the cross was certainly set before you clearly enough.

Let me put this question to you: How did your new life begin? Was it by working your heads off to please God? Or was it by responding to God’s Message to you? Are you going to continue this craziness? For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. If you weren’t smart enough or strong enough to begin it, how do you suppose you could perfect it? Did you go through this whole painful learning process for nothing? It is not yet a total loss, but it certainly will be if you keep this up!

Answer this question: Does the God who lavishly provides you with His own presence, His Holy Spirit, working things in your lives you could never do for yourselves, does He do these things because of your strenuous moral striving or because you trust Him to do them in you?” (Galatians 3:1-5, The Message).

Sometimes as an apostle dealing with church folks who have been duped back into religion by religious church leaders can be very frustrating. It’s like teaching your children to same lesson over and over again.

“Son, pick up your socks and put the clean ones in the drawer and the dirty ones in the basket.”

“Son, didn’t I just tell you to pick up your socks and put the clean ones in the drawer and the dirty ones in the basket? Why are they still on the floor? Please do what I asked you to do. Thank you.”

(Twenty minutes later; give or take depending on hardheaded your kids are).

“Ricardo Jr! Did you not hear me? Why are your socks still on the floor son! Now put them up and also you just lost your TV time.”

You know how it goes. That’s how apostles feel when we have to teach church folks the same thing over and over again. This is what Apostle Paul was going through with the Galatians.

They were still hanging on to childish (1 Cor. 13:11) and immature (carnal) ways and ideas (1 Cor. 3:1-4). But Paul, and pretty much all apostles who are, striving in the power of God to be patience and long suffering since patience is one of the true signs of an apostle with the heart of the Father, which is a miracle, sign, and wonder in itself for us to do (2 Cor. 12:12)! Lol!

What Paul was a trying to do in these five verses was use a logical argument through the principle of compare and contrast to show the difference between the good (Old Covenant Laws of Moses) and the better (New Covenant Laws of Christ).

Here are three of the comparisons and contrasts Apostle Paul used for the Galatians believers to “get it”:

  1. Received all of you the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
  2. Having begun in the Spirit, are all of you now made perfect by the flesh?
  3. He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Sometimes we have to use logical arguments to get believers to think according to common sense to get it. Our goal as apostles should be to take the advice of Paul that he gave to the young apostle Timothy when he said,

“Thou therefore, my son [apostolic son], be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker [cancerous] … But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender [give birth to] strifes. And the servant [minister] of the Lord must not strive [not argue]; but be gentle unto all men, apt [able] to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure [if God perhaps] will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive [taken control of] by him [by satan] at his [satan’s] will.” (2nd Timothy 2:1-2, 14-17, 23-26).

The Message Translation says,

“So, my son, throw yourself into this work for Christ. Pass on what you heard from me—the whole congregation saying Amen!—to reliable leaders who are competent to teach others. Repeat these basic essentials over and over to God’s people. Warn them before God against pious nitpicking, which chips away at the faith. It just wears everyone out. Concentrate on doing your best for God, work you won’t be ashamed of, laying out the truth plain and simple. Stay clear of pious talk that is only talk. Words are not mere words, you know. If they’re not backed by a godly life, they accumulate as poison in the soul … throwing believers off stride and missing the truth by a mile … Refuse to get involved in inane discussions; they always end up in fights. God’s servant must not be argumentative, but a gentle listener and a teacher who keeps cool, working firmly but patiently with those who refuse to obey. You never know how or when God might sober them up with a change of heart and a turning to the truth, enabling them to escape the devil’s trap, where they are caught and held captive, forced to run his errands.” (The Message).

This is what Paul was experiencing with the Galatians. And because he was going through it and lived it, he could then turn around and train and equip his apostolic/spiritual children in that which he already endured.

  • This is about the teacher as well as those who are students or disciples of the teacher both growing together. The five fold ministry leader grows in his ministry on how to become more patient with the disciples and children of God.
  • The children of God sees the ministry leader’s patience and loving care for them and their hearts and hard hardheadedness is softened by the Spirit of God and the Truth of God’s Words and we all together grow up in Christ who is the Head of the Body of Christ—the Church.

All five fold ministers are teachers and especially you apostles. Learn how to be an effective teacher, trainer, and equipper from Paul’s words and life testimony above.
