12 Things I Learned from Adam’s Disobedience about Family Life
By Ricardo ‘Reason’ Butler
I have a confession to make. I am not much of a family man … at all! I talk about the value of family and spending time with your kids and loving your wife (husbands for the ladies), but I don’t walk it out.
Every year God gives me a theme or a one word prophetic word. That word or theme is usually the thing that I am lacking in a particular area that needs attention and focus.
In 2017 that theme was to “set my household/family in order.” Here it is and we are almost half way through the year and I am just now getting started with fulfilling the Lord’s wishes that will only help my own destiny in Christ.
Usually, God gives me that theme or word of the year and I attack it as a beast like the previous years. I don’t know what’s wrong with me (I speak as a fool)! I go out in public and see men (VERY FEW MEN) who are sold out for their families. Some I know personally and I KNOW they are not believers of Christ but they got the family man idea down. They are not the best fathers, husbands, leaders or providers in the home, but they are doing much more than I am.
When I look at them playing with their kids or holding their wives hands I get this small envy for a second then my heart hardens to it and I don’t even try to allow the Spirit to change me.
The other day my wife showed me a video of a woman who was pure ghetto and she had a potty mouth on her. I could hardly listen so I walked away. My wife grabbed me to listen to her.
Her Facebook video was basically about “How to be wealthy as a husband and father.” I mean she was very graphic and blunt with her words. Though very carnal, God still spoke to me through it because she was speaking truth, as vain as it was in her profanity. I was convicted. So I turned my weakness for family by using my strength of organization and scheduling to begin building a plan to make the necessary sacrifices to be a family man regardless of how or what my heart felt.
A Step of Faith
My wife knows that in my personal ministry and in business that my principle is, “That if it’s not on the calendar or written down on my daily planner then it will not get done.” So I begin taking the points of the vulgar woman to write her complaints that my wife mentions a lot and began to schedule and plan as well as organize my time around how to be love my wife and spend time with my kids. And I have been following this simple plan for the last two months.
Here are some of the things on my calendar and on my schedule:
- Clean the bathroom
- Wash the dishes
- Take out the trash
- Read bedtime stories to the kids
- Spend time with the kids and do things they want to do
- Have devotional time with my wife
- Cook for the family
- Help the kids clean up their room
- Wash the clothes
- Date night with wife
- Get her flowers or buy her a card
There is a lot more things. These are some of the ones that I could think of at the moment. Mind you, I haven’t done any of these things within the last 11 months since we left our last vacation at Disney World. After I came home I tried to get a ministry started that I have wanted to start or get into for a very long time. It didn’t work out to my expectation and I just wanted to quit ministry and forget God all because of it.
I have allowed this bitterness lead me to shut down all ministries and totally stop talking to Christians. I talked to a few mentors and peers in the apostolic about what was going on. They saw God doing something else and told me to take a break for a year instead of quitting God. But that whole year, I picked up a habit of watching a lot of TV, movies, and even start collecting comic books. I’d go to work, come home, watch TV, buy comics books, read them, go to sleep and start all over day in and day out for 11 months.
Any believer coming to me for ministry during this time I sent them to someone else because I didn’t believe I was capable or able or even willing to help them. But since starting this family theme, I’ve gotten back into ministry, reading my Bible, blogging, fellowshipping, listening to worship music again, and praying more often.
So I have peace and joy again and I have hit the ground running!
Now today, I want to share with you 12 things that I have learned from Adam’s disobedience about family from Genesis 3.
1. Satan is clever so I need God’s Truth
“The serpent was clever, more clever than any wild animal God had made. He spoke to the Woman: ‘Do I understand that God told you not to eat from any tree in the garden?’ ” (v. 1, The Message).
Because of a ministry disappointment my guard was down through doubt, which allowed me to believe anything that gave me an answer of relief. This is why we need to be constantly reminded of God’s Words, Truths, and Promises over our lives. His Words cleanses us. His truth makes us free. And His Promises give us hope and direction for the future to come.
2. I Can Teach & Protect My Wife
“The Woman said to the serpent, ‘Not at all. We can eat from the trees in the garden. It’s only about the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, ‘Don’t eat from it; don’t even touch it or you’ll die.’” ” (vv. 2-3, The Message).
What I should have been doing instead of teaching, training, and equipping only the church, I should have been having devotional time with my wife. She’s been asking for us to get together to study the Word for years. I’m usually a person who loves to study alone so I kept turning her away. And this leaves my wife unprotected from the enemy as it did with Eve. Satan came in and lied to Eve because Adam was not accountable enough to God and himself to communicate with his wife what was required of them by the Father.
3. Satan Tempts us with Something God has probably already Promised
“The serpent told the Woman, ‘You won’t die. God knows that the moment you eat from that tree, you’ll see what’s really going on. You’ll be just like God, knowing everything, ranging all the way from good to evil.’ ” (vv. 4-5, The Message).
God’s whole purpose for creating Adam and Even as well as all mankind was to be just like God—to be Christ-like—conformed into the image of God’s Son. Satan was offering a shortcut; a twist way route to take. He gave them a false expectation appearing real (F.E.A.R.). I had an expectation for a ministry that I was already promised and I was willing to do whatever it took to make it happen with or without God. Then I blamed God for not fulfilling my ambitious and carnal desires.
4. I Do NOT Need to Hide from God when I Sin
“When they heard the sound of God strolling in the garden in the evening breeze, the Man and his Wife hid in the trees of the garden, hid from God. God called to the Man: ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked. And I hid.’ God said, ‘Who told you you were naked? Did you eat from that tree I told you not to eat from?’ ” (8-11, The Message).
In my case, I was not hiding from God when I sinned, but I of all people know better that I should have come to God with my frustration and admitted my mistakes and preconceived ideas of how God should fulfill His own plans for me. I allowed my bitterness to harden my heart and separate myself from God for almost a whole year. I know better!
5. I Am Accountable to God as a Steward
“God said, ‘Who told you you were naked? Did you eat from that tree I told you not to eat from?’ The Man said, ‘The Woman you gave me as a companion, she gave me fruit from the tree, and, yes, I ate it.’ God said to the Woman, ‘What is this that you’ve done?’ ” (vv. 11-12, The Message).
My family is my garden and I simply have not been the father, leaders, husband, and provider that God has created me to be all along.
6. God Will Still Side with me Against satan
“God told the serpent:
‘Because you’ve done this, you’re cursed,
cursed beyond all cattle and wild animals,
Cursed to slink on your belly
and eat dirt all your life.
I’m declaring war between you and the Woman,
between your offspring and hers.
He’ll wound your head,
you’ll wound his heel.’ ” (vv. 14-15, The Message).
Even in the midst of Adam and Eve’s failure God still sided with them against satan. If God is for us, who can be against us? For God truly will not leave or forsake us.
7. I Can Wound/Bruise the head/leadership (governmental rule) of satan
“I’m declaring war between you and the Woman,
between your offspring and hers.
He’ll wound your head,
you’ll wound his heel.’ ” (v. 15, The Message).
Satan has ruled as the god over this earth for way too long. The entire Word of God is an instruction manual on how to take back the kingdoms of this world by the spiritual forces of faith, hope, and love so it become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ (AND HIS BRIDE); and THEY shall reign. The Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven starts when I begin to release the Kingdom of God into my own home through Christ like leadership and rule where He has preeminence.
8. I am the Spiritual Leader of My Home
“He told the Woman:
‘I’ll multiply your pains in childbirth;
you’ll give birth to your babies in pain.
You’ll want to please your husband,
but he’ll lord it over you.’ ” (v. 16, The Message).
Jesus’ death on the cross reversed this chastisement for women everywhere to …
“But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: for we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. Ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.” (1st Corinthians 11:3, Ephesians 5:22-31, 1st Peter 3:7 KJV).
Paul used words like Saviour, love, gave Himself for, sanctify, cleanse with the washing of the Word of God, present glorious, no spots, no wrinkles, OR ANY SUCH THINGS, holy, without blemish, love them as self, never hated their own flesh, nourish, cherish, and one more word not noticeable but it is there. The text said “Christ” not “Jesus.” The Word “Christ” means “Anointed” and anointed means, “To smear or rub with oil, i.e. (implication) to consecrate to an office or religious (spiritual) service:–Anoint.”
A head is ANOINTED TO BREAK YOKES OF BONDAGE IN HIS FAMILY! That’s what Headship is all about! A man is “anointed” to do what he does in his home. He just needs training for that anointing to be released. It is his OFFICE or official duty as he is consecrated to do it well.
He is a spiritual covering of protection and when those under him step from out under that Satan will come into their “Garden of Eden” and wreck that. Why do you think God called to ADAM FIRST and not Eve? Because the father—MAN—is responsible and accountable for what goes on in his household.
What happens when the head functions properly and all the body follows the head? Answer:
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the HEAD, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments [TO THE BODY—THE HOUSEHOLD]; as the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for THERE the LORD COMMANDED THE BLESSINGS, even life for evermore.” (Psalms 133:1-3).
9. I CAN Provide for My Family through Hard Work
“He told the Man:
‘Because you listened to your wife
and ate from the tree
That I commanded you not to eat from,
‘Don’t eat from this tree,’
The very ground is cursed because of you;
getting food from the ground
Will be as painful as having babies is for your wife;
you’ll be working in pain all your life long.
The ground will sprout thorns and weeds,
you’ll get your food the hard way,
Planting and tilling and harvesting,
sweating in the fields from dawn to dusk,
Until you return to that ground yourself, dead and buried;
you started out as dirt, you’ll end up dirt.’ ” (vv. 17-19, The Message).
“He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack [slow, lazy] hand: but the hand [power, abilities, and skills] of the diligent [hard, precise, focused, sharp, and skillful work] maketh rich [prospers].” (Proverbs 10:4).
Doing accurate and skillful (as well as GOOD wholesome) work based upon knowing your spiritual gifts, heart/passions, abilities/skills, personality type, and past experiences along with Christ-like character and integrity is the best way to provide for your family. There is no reason why a man cannot use what God has gave him or what God has put deep down inside of him to take care of his family. It might take some time to learn how God has wired and created you, but once you know it will be easier to find jobs according to how God has made you.
10. I CAN Build up My Wife’s Potential
“The Man, known as Adam, named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.” (v. 20, The Message).
Adam spoke over his wife by naming her Eve. Her potential and destiny was to become the mother of all living though they had no children yet. And she today has become the mother of all mankind as the first woman created by God. My wife has potential to a purposeful end. It is her destiny and I should be able to recognize the things she is good at, gifted with, and passionate about and speak divine purpose and the Father’s favor over her future like Christ uses the Word to make His bride—the Church—Glorious!
11. God STILL will Provide for Me Even when I sin
“God made leather clothing for Adam and his wife and dressed them.” (v. 21, The Message).
God still provided the spiritual covering and need for Adam and Eve after they sinned. God is still a Father and He will not leave us helpless and hopeless. Don’t think because you’ve fallen, sinned, made a mistake or a bad decision (or decisions) that God gives up on you. We grieve His heart and Spirit with our foolishness but God still correct those whom He loves for their benefit.
12. Even when God Forgives me of sin He will Still Discipline/Correct me as a Consequence for my actions, which can Delay my Destiny
“God said, “The Man has become like one of us, capable of knowing everything, ranging from good to evil. What if he now should reach out and take fruit from the Tree-of-Life and eat, and live forever? Never—this cannot happen!” So God expelled them from the Garden of Eden and sent them to work the ground, the same dirt out of which they’d been made. He threw them out of the garden and stationed angel-cherubim and a revolving sword of fire east of it, guarding the path to the Tree-of-Life.” (vv. 22-24, The Message).
The way to Eternal Life was delayed from mankind because of a bad decision to eat from the wrong tree. Jesus came down to correct that sin and restore order. It took thousands of years between the first Adam and the Last Adam before this forgiveness, discipline, correction that leads to Eternal Life to get back into alignment with God’s purpose for mankind. In our everyday mistakes and sins it is no different. These errors are wrong turns where we drive the broadway to destruction where we are brought to the realization to make the necessary corrections and u-turn to go back to the fork in the road of our bad decision. Then we can begin to go the strait and narrow route to Eternal and the Abundant Life in Christ where our purpose and destiny is.
IN CONCLUSION …
In an effort to share my heart in all honesty and transparency, I pray that God opens your eyes to the family before your eyes that God has given you. We try to conquer the world and leave our wives and kids to fend for themselves.
It is not God’s order. It all starts at home. If we as five fold ministry leaders cannot take care of the household how do we expect to lead the household of God? We can’t. So let’s backtrack to what we see lacking in our domain and have Kingdom dominion to serve, love, and lead by example to attitude and character of Christ in the home and let God increase and enlarge our borders and measure of rule to influence and impact others in our sphere of influence locally, regionally, nationally, and globally!
So continue to feed the Seed and Nurture the Nature, for by Divine Enlightenment you are Becoming What you already ARE! Apostolic blessings and do know that you are highly FLAVORED of the Lord!
May the blessings of the KINGDOM of the Father come upon you and your family through the Seed of the Word planted grow up 30fold, 60fold, 100fold, and even a double portion, which would be 200fold in Jesus’ name by the power of the Spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ WHO IS THE SAVIOR OF THE WHOLE WORLD! Amen!
