Paul’s Ministry of the True Gospel

By Apostle Ricardo ‘Reason’ Butler

“Do you think I speak this strongly in order to manipulate crowds? Or curry favor with God? Or get popular applause? If my goal was popularity, I wouldn’t bother being Christ’s slave. Know this—I am most emphatic here, friends—this great Message I delivered to you is not mere human optimism. I didn’t receive it through the traditions, and I wasn’t taught it in some school. I got it straight from God, received the Message directly from Jesus Christ.

I’m sure that you’ve heard the story of my earlier life when I lived in the Jewish way. In those days I went all out in persecuting God’s church. I was systematically destroying it. I was so enthusiastic about the traditions of my ancestors that I advanced head and shoulders above my peers in my career. Even then God had designs on me. Why, when I was still in my mother’s womb He chose and called me out of sheer generosity! Now He has intervened and revealed His Son to me so that I might joyfully tell non-Jews about Him.

Immediately after my calling—without consulting anyone around me and without going up to Jerusalem to confer with those who were apostles long before I was—I got away to Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus, but it was three years before I went up to Jerusalem to compare stories with Peter. I was there only fifteen days—but what days they were! Except for our Master’s brother James, I saw no other apostles. (I’m telling you the absolute truth in this.)

Then I began my ministry in the regions of Syria and Cilicia. After all that time and activity I was still unknown by face among the Christian churches in Judea. There was only this report: “That man who once persecuted us is now preaching the very message he used to try to destroy.” Their response was to recognize and worship God because of me!” (Galatians 1:11-23, The Message).

For today’s “Apostolic Lesson & Lessons for Apostles from the Book of Galatians” I want to touch on a few things from Paul’s testimony above that all apostles and apostolic people can learn.

[1] The Apostles’ Doctrine/Teaching is NOT Man-made:

“But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man …” (vv. 11-12, KJV).

I don’t know about you, but I have heard some wacky teachings coming from a lot of apostles. And they sware their teachings is THEE teaching. The funny things about these apostles are that they have a cult like following and they cut off plus dis-fellowship with any who do not adhere to their strict guidelines of discipleship. I don’t have space here to call out some camps but I am pretty sure you can name some.

[2] The Apostles’ Doctrine/Teaching is Given by Revelation straight from Christ:

“… neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (v. 12, KJV).

Let me make a distinction here. Jesus gave the apostle, prophet, teacher, evangelist, and pastor to teach, train up, equip, disciple, etc, the church to maturity. Therefore we are taught. I was taught. Paul was taught and even says in other verses that he learned. Being taught is where I got something from a man but the Spirit of God might not have quickened my understanding to it. Then there are times where a man of God HAS taught me BUT I got the revelation FROM THE FATHER! Jesus asked Peter who He was after all the teaching he received from “God in a Man” or “God in the flesh” but Jesus told Him that He received the revelation that Jesus was the Son of God from the Father. Sheep know the Shepherds voice. That voice (revelation) can come from the Scriptures, the Spirit, the man of God, the counsel of witnesses, creation, etc. A revelation is when God opens my understanding of who He is through whatever He chooses to use. I get revelation from God of Christ sometimes through a cartoon. Not to be funny, but since the Doctrine of Christ is not made up of man, then if a man is TRULY teaching and representing the Word, did I get it from the man or did God give it to me? If a man made up a teaching that is not of God then I could never get revelation (nor here the Shepherd’s voice)! See the difference? Even all that Paul taught, he and Peter spoke about us getting the Revelation of Christ for ourselves! That’s when we can truly say, “For I neither received it of man … [I] need not that any man teach [me].” From the greatest of the least will KNOW Him! (Hebrews 8:11)

[3] Every Apostle has a ‘BC’ (Before Christ) Testimony to Share:

“For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: and profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.” (vv. 13-14, KJV).

Coming up in church circles they teach us to tell our story …

  1. Before Christ (Old Covenant),
  2. When we encounter Christ (Four Gospels),
  3. Life after Christ came (New Covenant), and
  4. What Christ is doing today (Book of Revelation)!

This is the basic outline of a testimony. Every apostle has a “Before Christ came into my life” story. Some are dramatic, some are sad stories, some are heroic stories of overcoming some evil, and others are don’t sound to amazing at all. The point is we had our times in figurative places that can be liked to Babylon, Egypt, Sodom, etc. Look back and tell your story apostle. That’s the most important and powerful part of your Gospel Message. It’s the impartation of (as Paul said) “our very own lives [souls].” (1 Thess. 2:8).

[4] Every Apostle is Called by Grace and Set Apart for God from the Womb:

“But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by His grace.” (v. 15, KJV).

If prophets are known from the womb and ordained prophets, then apostles are much more so.

[5] The Apostles’ Doctrine is the Gospel of the Kingdom with the Message of Christ Being Revealed IN the Apostle:

“To reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood.” (v. 16, KJV).

Sonship is the centerfold of the Scriptures, if you will. It’s the procession from babe or child, to son, to mature man of God (women included too)! God first REVEALS Christ IN US. Next, we are told Christ in us, the hope of glory. And finally, God desires to see Christ FULLY FORMED in us as we are to be fully conformed into His image or made conformable to His death! Once we KNOW HIM and are KNOWN OF HIM that’s when the apostle is ready to preach Him among the non-believers. Not to preach or teach ABOUT Him, but to REVEAL Him! To introduce Him as a person; as a man introduces a best friend to a new friend! That’s the Gospel!

[6] Anybody called into Apostleship Should Connect with other Apostles to “Compare Notes” for Confirmation of Apostolic Ministry:

“Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother. Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.” (vv. 17-20, KJV).

We all know (or SHOULD KNOW) that iron sharpens iron, in the mouth of two or three witnesses truths are confirmed and established, as well as that in the multitude of WISE counselors there is safety and plans succeed! Well if you THINK you are called to be an apostle, then you need to get around some apostles and compare notes. Let other apostles hear what God has shown you. Don’t be afraid to be rejected. To expect to be praised either. Come with a healthy expectation that you MIGHT BE rejected OR confirmed and praised! Some apostles are tough on emerging apostles vs. those who say they are. We have to be just as or more so careful of the apostleship in even comparison to prophets. In the Old Prophets found false were to be STONED! How much more so today for those who are found false as apostles?

[7] Every Apostle Begins their Ministry in their Measure of Rule (their Jerusalem: Home, Community, City, County, and Region):

“Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; and was unknown by face unto the churches of Judea which were in Christ: but they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.” (vv. 21-23, KJV).

Understand that if this is your first run in the apostolic that you will be unknown. No one is looking for you. No one is expecting your coming. Even Jesus was without honor in His own home town. There is no fanfare or red carpet. Even more so today, with every Tom, Dick, Sheila, and Harry being apostles is not an impressive event. So instead of claiming any titles or name dropping the big wigs that you might or might not know, just get out there and let your fruit speak for itself in the local area where you reside. You will reap a harvest as God increases you IF you are truly called to apostleship. If you are not, then the result won’t be there and you can begin again in God to find out what you are really called to do! Sometimes we win and sometimes we learn! So let’s fail forward as John Maxwell, the leadership expert would say!

May the blessings of the KINGDOM of the Father come upon you and your family 30fold, 60fold, 100fold, and even a double portion, which would be 200fold in Jesus’ name by the power of the Spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ WHO IS THE SAVIOR OF THE WHOLE WORLD! Amen!
